Two-Year Old Molars Relief

One cause of “the terrible twos” is the emergence of your toddler’s two-year old molars. These last four molars are the final baby teeth to erupt and can be an unpleasant experience for children and parents alike. Since these molars are so large, they tend to be painful, causing symptoms such as gum irritation, irritability, and drooling in your child. This pain can cause the most well-behaved child to become irritable and difficult. To make life easier for you and your child, you should learn the symptoms of two-year old molars and know the best strategies to provide relief during this difficult time.

When do Babies Get Their Molars?

Children’s second molars typically emerge between 20 and 33 months. Located next to the canine (cuspid) teeth, these are the furthest back set of teeth they’ll develop until their wisdom teeth emerge in their late teens or early adulthood. Every child’s mouth is different, so these molars may erupt one by one or all at once.

Two-Year Old Molars Symptoms

The emergence of two-year old molars can present some difficult challenges for children and parents alike. While some children will show no signs of discomfort while their molars grow in, others may experience the following symptoms:

  • Sore red gums where the molars erupt
  • Drooling
  • Chewing on objects
  • Interrupted sleep

In addition to physical symptoms, it’s not uncommon to notice a change in your toddler’s moods as they deal with their molars growing in. This process can be painful and uncomfortable, causing even the happiest child to become irritable and sullen. If you notice your child giving into bad behaviors, try to comfort them with one of the two-year old molar remedies below.

Cold

Two-Year Old Molars Relief

When it comes to two-year old molar pain, medication should only be used as a last resort. The good news is that there are many effective remedies to give your child relief as their molars emerge. Anything cold can help numb the pain of cutting gums. Cool a wet washcloth in the freezer and let your child chew on it to massage their gums. You can also place a cool, wet piece of gauze directly on the gums, or rub their gums with a cold spoon to provide relief. Massaging the gums with your finger can also be effective. Additionally, hard, crunchy, healthy foods are helpful to apply pressure to the gums. Feeding your child foods such as apples, carrots, or cucumbers can be a great way to alleviate some of their discomfort.
